A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's flagship public works projects.
The accident took place on the Interoceanic Train, a line constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate what caused this accident,” stated the head of state.
The official reported that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The leader added plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the former leader, whose time in office concluded the year before. This venture was intimately linked to his leadership's developmental agenda for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The development of both rail lines was managed by the armed forces, marking a significant growth of its role in public infrastructure. They were built at an rapid speed, surpassing expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously raised significant apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an earlier crash this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a major opposition party demanded an prompt suspension in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This pause was suggested while awaiting a full technical review. The party declared that the tragedy "requires immediate answers."
In reaction, the head of state asserted that the train had been operating in full adherence to all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and management of these strategic projects.
