Comeback Medvedev Claims First Title in Nearly 30 Months

Nineteen of Daniil Medvedev's twenty-one titles have been won on hard surfaces

A resurgent Medvedev claimed his initial title for nearly 30 months with victory over opponent Moutet in the competition championship match.

The athlete, a former world number one, has had a difficult period, winning just one win at the Grand Slams and suffering a setback at the US Open.

The player's inconsistency on the professional circuit - and issues with his serving in especial - led to him falling of the elite rankings and ultimately separating with long-time mentor his previous coach.

Currently working with Johansson and his other coach, the tennis star has steadily improved in the past month - culminating in a closely contested 7-5 4-6 6-3 triumph over opponent Moutet.

This represents the player's first championship after the Italian tournament and initial on a hard court since that period of 2023.

The win also means he has achieved 21 titles at 21 various tournaments.

"For the first time I am participating in a event with my both daughters at once, so to win a trophy is especially meaningful," commented ranked player Medvedev.

"This title is in honour of my younger daughter Victoria, because the first title I won when my older daughter Alisa was born was for her."

The athlete, the 2021 US Open champion, had lost his previous six finals, featuring in the German tournament earlier this year.

Medvedev's defensive approach and frequent emotional displays on the tennis court had prompted observers to doubt if his ability to compete at the highest level was finished.

However the 29-year-old has altered his approach in the last few weeks, making an effort to come to the net and perform aggressively, supported by an improved serve.

Medvedev came back from a disadvantage in the opening set against the challenging Frenchman, taking four of the concluding five points to take the lead.

The competitors exchanged break points in the second set before the challenger, striving for his initial professional victory, gained dominance to push for a final set.

The opponent saved four initial opportunities in a close final set before the Russian broke to fifteen to secure the win.

Fittingly, the winner earned the title with a rally at the front of the court, with his opponent incapable to manage a volley after two hours and 38 minutes.
