Correctional Facilities Cannot Be Resolved Immediately, Government Official Says, while Law Enforcement Search For Two Individuals Mistakenly Freed

Shadow justice secretary the shadow minister has described the situation as a "total mess," speaking this morning.

Speaking during a radio program, he referenced comments made by David Lammy after a recent prisoner release, stating that Lammy would establish more robust verifications.

"It took six days for the prison service reportedly to even become aware this has happened" and notify the police, the shadow official says, "who are now a week behind in the search to find him."

The opposition figure condemns the minister's performance during yesterday's PMQs and accuses him of a "complete failure in responsibility."

Addressing incorrect inmate discharges more generally, Jenrick underlines that "every single mistaken release [...] is unacceptable."

He acknowledges there were similar incidents under the former Conservative government, but claims the number "has risen significantly" under the current government.

Advocating more prisons to be built, he continues: "The public expect now are adequate safeguards implemented."

"That is a specific administrative failure by the justice department supervised by David Lammy," the opposition member says.
