The child of ex- South African Head of State Jacob G Zuma has pleaded not guilty to terror-linked allegations at the start of her legal proceedings in the port city of Durban city.

The defendant, 43 years old, is being prosecuted over comments she posted on social media in the past during deadly protests in South Africa that occurred subsequent to the arrest of her father.

A week of chaos in multiple regions of the country in the summer of 2021, including looting and fire-setting, left at least three hundred killed and caused damage worth an projected 2.8 billion dollars (£2.2bn).

The defendant has been charged of inciting this unrest and faces charges of incitement to commit terror-related activities and public violence.

Context of the Case

The unrest were centered in the areas of the Gauteng province and KwaZulu-Natal province and followed the former president's apprehension for ignoring a legal directive to appear as a witness at an investigation into accusations of graft while he was holding office.

Ms Zuma-Sambudla has repeatedly refuted the accusations against her, with her legal representative in the past labelling the state's case as insufficient.

She has also frequently stated the charges against her were an bid to settle political scores with her dad after he established his own political organization and competed against the ruling party.

Backing and Court Representation

This was supported by the Zuma foundation, which said the legal matter was an "abuse of power" and a "organized effort" of "political and familial persecution" against the former president and his family.

A few of backers from her party, uMkhonto weSizwe, gathered outside the provincial high court, while her father and other group representatives participated in the court sessions inside.

Her legal team has maintained that the proof presented by government lawyers is inadequate and does not have compelling grounds for a criminal finding.

Central Elements of the Legal Proceedings

  • Online comments from the past form the foundation of the state's evidence
  • Fatal demonstrations in July 2021 resulted in major fatalities and monetary damage
  • The individual on trial is charged with multiple counts of incitement to violence
  • Judicial trials are anticipated to continue for multiple court sessions

The legal proceedings continues as the prosecution and defense present their cases before the judge in what is projected to be a carefully observed judicial process with major politically charged ramifications for South Africa.
