European Union Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States on five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on figures who have been central to campaigns to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the move.

The bans were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
