Information Available Regarding the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident
No fewer than 16 individuals perished and in excess of 40 were wounded when gunmen fired on a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian police have labeled a terrorist attack.
As of the newest reports, authorities have confirmed the death toll remains at 16, which includes one of the alleged attackers. Moreover, 42 people with injuries were transported to the hospital.
The deceased are yet to be officially identified, but police believe their ages range between 10 and 87 years of age.
Here are the victims who have been named so far.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.
Reportedly a father-of-five, he was the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and acquaintances remembered him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative said.
Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their youngest child just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.
She described the events leading up to the attack, stating they were standing when the shooting began. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she said.
The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured immense hardship in their childhood. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.
Dan Elkayam
The French foreign ministry have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is a casualty.
In a statement, the Foreign Minister expressed that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This cowardly attack is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the message continued.
One Child
A child who was taken to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, according to police reports.
One Israeli Citizen
One victim from Israel was among those killed during the attack, as per reports referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Those Injured
From the 42 people transported to hospitals, a significant number are still under care, with a number in a critical state. Those hurt comprise two police officers who responded to the attack.
A wounded man is a bystander who rushed to the scene to confront one of the gunmen. Hailed as a hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Sources state he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.
He wrote, he recounted the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the actions of those who came to assist. He said he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the shooting. He told reporters he heard “a large number” of gunshots.
“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
