A uniquely yellow-colored apartment block in the background assisted us verify the video.
Our team is checking video footage and photographs posted this morning that depict the aftermath of a alleged vehicle-borne explosive blast that Russian officials say fatally injured a senior military officer in Moscow.
Officials in Russia confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the vehicle that exploded and that he later died to his wounds. An investigation is under way.
The initial step to verify the site of where the pictures were from was based on posts indicating the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the Russian capital.
We used street-view imagery on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex to match the unique yellow hue of a nearby apartment building seen in the video.
Identifying additional buildings, lamp-posts and the street layout verified the exact location the footage were captured.
We also checked that the videos were recent and that the images had not undergone digital alteration.
