Over two dozen Olympic champions, mentors and other world-class competitors have put their names to a letter urging a halt to the death penalty of a boxing champion and trainer, who is on death row in the country.

Growing Global Anger

Amidst growing worldwide anger over the country's increasing application of executions as a means of suppression, the powerfully expressed appeal condemns the government's ruling to maintain the execution order of the athlete.

The boxer, three decades old, from the city in north-east Iran, was arrested for taking part in nationwide protests in two thousand nineteen and accused of backing an dissident organization. He has passed half a decade in incarceration, where he has been abused and held in solitary confinement.

“Athletics is intended to promote faith, solidarity, and fortitude,” the endorsers expressed. “The death penalty of a winner for his beliefs is a clear violation on these ideals and a warning to every athlete who ventures to express dissent.

Record of Killing Sports Figures

The appeal noted that the athlete's circumstances was part of a pattern and underscored the nation's record of executing competitors for their views, including Habib Khabiri, captain of the football side, and Fourouzan Abdi, captain of the national women’s volleyball team. In two thousand twenty, an athlete, a young Iranian wrestling champion, was also executed.

Further endorsers to the appeal include a yachting pioneer, who skippered the first female-only team in a round-the-world competition and was the pioneering lady to receive a prestigious nautical honor; the previous skipper of the soccer side an athlete; and a footballer, who was in the national team for the global tournament.

Arrest and Unfair Trial

Vafaei Sani was arrested in March 2020. The accusations against him entailed “promoting decay on Earth through arson and destruction of state assets”. His ruling has been annulled twice but on 4 October it was confirmed on the third attempt. His legal proceedings was denounced as “deeply biased” by advocates and organizations.

Urging to UN

The urging to halt the boxer's capital punishment comes after a 2023 statement to the global human rights chief for rights, signed by more than a hundred advocates and entities, urging intervention to avert the competitor's execution.

Execution Crisis

According to reports, there is an “death penalty surge in the country, which has attained alarming proportions”. In 2023, authorities put to death at least eight hundred fifty-three people – a forty-eight percent surge on 2022. The year before, data showed nine hundred seventy-two executions, representing the highest number since the year 2015. In excess of 800 people have been put to death so far in 2025.

Political prisoners and protesters are focus, notably in the wake of the 2022 demonstrations. Specialists say the Iranian authorities have utilized the death penalty to stifle opposition, instil fear among the public and tighten their grip on rule.
