Patients Discontinuing Slimming Medications Put On Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

New research indicates that people who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds far faster than those who end conventional lifestyle regimens.

Findings released in a major health publication shows that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the weight returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"People using such medications must be aware of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the medication ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain suggests a reversion to starting mass in about one and a half years.

Comparing Therapies

The study, which reviewed dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

The team point out that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise generally see a slower creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

The Reason for the Fast Regain

Doctors believe the mode of action of the drugs explains the accelerated rebound.

The injections copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Condition?

Medical guidelines suggest the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the therapy might need to be ongoing.

This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "underscore the persistent nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Accounts

Individuals who have come off the jabs report a intense resurgence of hunger.

"It felt as if a switch activating and you become extremely hungry," described one woman.

This difficulty is exacerbated if patients have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Significant Adoption

Survey data suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Use is greater among females compared to males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, clinicians emphasize that while these medications are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing behavioural management.
