Russell Wilson Fires Back at Ex-Mentor Sean Payton Over Quarterback Comments
NY Giants quarterback Russell Wilson didn't mince words on online platforms this Tuesday, responding to latest comments from his former coach Sean Payton.
"Classless... but not surprised...," Wilson stated via social media. "Had no idea you're still offering rewards 15+ years later through the press."
Wilson's response directly referenced the notorious Bounty Gate controversy from 2009-11, when Payton led the New Orleans Saints.
At that time, the NFL found that the Saints had rewarded team members for making aggressive tackles on opponents. Consequently, Payton received a suspension from the league for a full year.
What Sparked the Recent Exchange
The quarterback's response came after Payton made comments after Denver's remarkable comeback victory over the Giants. The coach remarked that the Giants had "found a little spark" with their new QB, who has taken over Wilson as the starting quarterback.
Moreover, Payton implied that he had told team owner John Mara that he would prefer facing Wilson instead of Dart.
"I spoke to John Mara recently and I said, 'We were hoping that the switch would've happened well after our game,'" Payton commented.
Context of the Wilson-Payton Relationship
- Wilson joined the Broncos from the Seahawks in 2022 and inked a five-year, $245M extension.
- The Broncos went 4-11 in his first season prior to Denver brought in Payton, who was returning to coaching after a period in TV commentary.
- The coach replaced Wilson late into the 2023 season, a move that prevented the player from suffering an injury.
Had Wilson remained on the roster by March 2024, his $37 million salary for 2025 would have been guaranteed. In the end, Wilson was released, ending the ugly split between the player and his coach.
