A confidential source has disclosed the Afghan leak inquiry that British authorities left behind classified devices permitting Afghanistan's rulers to locate Afghans who worked with international military.

Information Leak Endangers Numerous at Risk

The whistleblower, called Person A, explained that Afghans affected by the security lapse were advised to move homes and alter their mobile numbers to protect themselves from militant forces.

Lawmakers are investigating official handling of a massive breach of private information affecting approximately 19k individuals who had requested to move to the United Kingdom to avoid militant rule.

The Information Breach Occurred

A data file with confidential details, such as names, phone numbers and sometimes household data, was mistakenly released by an official stationed at UK special forces headquarters in last year.

The incident became known months later, when details of nine people who had applied to relocate to the UK were posted on social media.

Taliban Capabilities

Many believe there's this misconception that the Taliban do not have comparable resources that western nations possess,” the whistleblower testified to the committee.

All equipment was abandoned in Afghanistan; it's in their hands. Should they obtain your phone number, they are able to track you down to within metres. This is exactly how the unit did.”

During testimony about whether the Taliban owned sophisticated technology, the whistleblower confirmed: “They've got everything.”

Impact of the Security Lapse

Early investigations presented to the inquiry indicated that approximately fifty kin and co-workers of individuals impacted by the breach had been killed.

A legal restriction about the breach was enacted in last year and prevented all details concerning it from media reporting until mid-2025.

Safety Measures

Given injunction limitations, Person A and the non-governmental organization she collaborated with told Afghan families they were working with that they had “apprehensions that mobile communications had been breached”.

“Our suggestion was that they relocate when possible and altered their mobile numbers. Those were the two main details that, should militant forces had access to these details, would cause their location being found,” Person A explained.

Challenged Assessments

The whistleblower argued that government assessment conducted by a former official had been incorrect to determine that the possession of the records by militant forces was “minimally impact an individual's existing exposure”.

“The thing to remember is that these Afghans are in hiding from militant forces; they live secretly. All concerns relate to former occupations.”

The source explained horrific violence suffered by at-risk Afghans, including electrocution, simulated drowning, and severe beatings.

“We have had young kids who have had bones crushed to try to get the family to reveal locations,” the whistleblower revealed.
