The British designer Antony Price, the influential UK-based designer responsible for a series of unforgettable images associated with artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has died aged 80.

His reputation was built on his sculptured silhouettes and dramatic aesthetics, including the soft-colored suits that featured in the iconic band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "their hit Rio".

"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement on social media."

This news arrives shortly after he debuted his newest line in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Singer Lily Allen showcased a dress inspired by the famous black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" made famous by the late Princess Diana.

A Pioneering Career

Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price headed for London in the early 1960s to attend the renowned Royal College of Art.

A year after graduating, he began designing clothing for men at the company Stirling Copper and was behind the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger famously wore during The Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.

He established his eponymous line in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show featured as its opener outfits on the famed model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the wedding dress Price specifically designed for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.

Partnerships with Stars

A long-time collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the distinctive jacket the artist wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His trademark skill to fuse tailoring for all genders along with his technical proficiency in crafting sculptural silhouettes cemented his status as a "genuine original," as stated by the British Fashion Council.

In the 1990s, he commenced designing ensembles for Camilla, now Queen Consort, including several ensembles for her American tour following her marriage.

With a vocation that covered half a century, Price staged what would be his last show in London last month in collaboration with the design house 16Arlington.

  • Defined Shapes: A hallmark of his work.
  • Dramatic Impact: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
  • Boundary-Pushing Tailoring: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
  • Working with Stars and Royalty: Spanning iconic musicians and members of the royal family.

The fashion world mourns the loss to a true visionary whose impact on fashion and music remains profoundly felt.
