The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

As any significant awards ceremony draws close, you'll find an outcry for introducing additional classifications to recognize underappreciated efforts and delight the passions of fans with niche passions.

A fellow writer previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. The same goes for strategy board titles, this being someone's personal cause. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request stands as crucial and significant. The demand is this: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Categorizing art by genre is not a science; it remains highly personal, and it will always spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason cinema institutions avoid this approach. But it is a necessary evil for the industry of gaming, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies presently include classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these classifications effectively encompass many game types, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Think about these this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles in a particular game, intense tile-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Which classification works within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers launched regularly without proper recognition in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated in any category in 2014
  • Another imaginative release missed out in 2019
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Just some logic titles managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're modest productions, however the design behind logic titles is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most popular titles in the world and have been for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges well-known building titles claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it also contends for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. It would be easy to populate five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these represent titles that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers are working at the hard edge game development, producing among essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
