He has committed acts 10,000 times as bad – the present calculation of deaths resulting from his reductions to foreign assistance is 600,000 and increasing, and recently a study projected his energy policies would cause deaths another 1.3 million. However nothing as distinctive. No former leader would have dared – really, no other president would have imagined – independently wrecking significant portions of the White House to construct a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the active collaboration of some of America's wealthiest, the majority of whom maintain dealings with public institutions.
We went from 'the humble will receive the world' to 'the humble will perish of cholera'
As confusing as it is to observe the president try to upend the established notion regarding democracy and substitute it with its complete opposite, there exists a significant segment among Americans who wouldn't consider it totally unfamiliar. This includes individuals like us – in older age cohorts a near majority – who were brought up within mainstream Protestant traditions.
We have witnessed over the years while conservative evangelical congregations transformed the Christ we grew up with into exactly the opposite of who we understood him to be. Essentially, they transformed an image of affection into an icon of hate who approves exactly the harshness that he denounced in scripture; this change developed at a slower pace, through multiple decades as opposed to months, yet it remains disturbing through similar means, a confusing personal impact for countless people.
A Damaging Christianity Establishes Itself
So let me first describe the Savior from my childhood, since in theory Christ is the focus within Christian belief, and given that the rapidly expanding group of Americans might have little sense about him because they identify as non-believers or uncertain individuals or nones. I raise no objection with these different approaches, nor with different religions; however I believe that there are pearls of substantial value in the Christian story.
It is decidedly not the account of a powerful ruler appearing; rather, a child comes into the world to homeless parents in a garage, who need to rapidly escape to a foreign land to escape secret police. The infant develops in simple surroundings, a laboring woodworker; his doctrine focuses on affection for others, specifically for the disadvantaged – not merely emotional affection, but practical compassion, demonstrated through nourishing and protecting. Christ's response to hostility is to present the additional cheek – not as an act of passive acceptance, but as a method to instruct the attacker; his crime policy states that when someone steals your jacket you must offer the person your additional clothing as well.
The apparent and straightforward fact that the Savior in biblical accounts requests a type of extreme compassion centered on the poor has perpetually caused the Christian faith rather a provocative belief system: engaging for the populace, but owing to its inherent radicalness needing to be contained. During the 1950s it was contained through watering down – Protestant Christianity was so prevalent that it basically sanctified existing conditions.
A Conflict for the Finest of Us
Therefore I have felt heartened to see the determined opposition regarding Trump develop in this past year.
